The book presents the scientific results of the research project.

In the essay section Gerd Dethlefs and Roland Pieper describe the church buildings, the historic preconditions of their creation and their development from an architectural history point of view. Dirk Strohmann shows the changes in the preservation treatment of medieval wall paintings. The project members Anna Skriver, Katharina Heiling and Helga Giersiepen compile their results in terms of all the properties examined and evaluate these in a Westphalian and a national context.

The catalogue presents the thirteen churches examined and their wall paintings. Architecture and painted polychrome architectural decorations are also incorporated. The figurative scenes are described in detail and scientifically analysed. The catalogue also explains the inscriptions, the painting techniques, the state of preservation and the conservation history of the paintings.

The book appears as Volume 53 in the series Denkmalpflege and Forschung (Heritage Preservation and Research) in Westfalen.
